Secret of the Runes' brillliancy
« on: November 13, 2003, 01:59:00 PM »
HELLO HELLO ALL!!
Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends! I'm so glad you could attend, come inside, come inside!

Just to start our prolific discussions about this band's brilliancy, I'll pay my hommage to this which is their greatest album!

The complexity of arrangements is very superior to the previous albums. The choir sounds stronger, the orchestra sounds tighter and the bandmembers also shine on. OK, they're not highly technical, but this is compensated by the whole mood created by the mix. For example, Nifelheim has a very somber atmosphere, and in fact feels COLD (love those four-layered chorus!!!), whithout showing much instrumental virtuosity.
I'm owned by this album's beauty.   :bigshock:    :bigshock:    :bigshock:
Höre! Höre! Alles was ist endet!

Happy you've been able to follow the developement in the same way as we see it (and therefore prefer the latest record). I hope that you'll like the upcoming stuff as well.

About the technicalities. It really shouldn't be technical, it's a concept over a nordic theme, it have too be mid tempo, moody and have folk music influences.
The exception is "Muspelheim" which is fast and have a really difficult riff - the first riff. It's very uncomfortable to play on a guitar really and the tempo makes it tricky.

It makes perfect sense!
What about the next album? Will it be thematic too? Will it be heavier, more technical or progressive than SotR?
Kristian told me some secrets about it but told me not to spread............

I tried... He says it will be a mix of Justin Timberlake with Linkin Park!! Cool idea, though I prefered Britney meets Limp Biskit...   :bawling:

Well, you just have to wait and see how it sounds. It's very varied though.
It's not a concept album though, I'll tell you that.

Well, I have heard almost every THERION album in the last three years. Everything, from "Of Darkness" to "Secret of the Runes".
From this kind of comperative perspective, I can certainly say that SoTR is the best ALBUM so far.

However, I want to underline that in my opinion SoTR is the best album  as a whole , that is as far as cohesiveness among songs and concepts is concerned. Moreover I consider it to be perhaps the best in the way each song represents its title (musically speaking, not in relation to lyrics).
How can one fail to feel the coldness of Nifelheim or the heat of Muspelheim...!

By the way, perhaps people would like to identify themselves with a world from that album and discuss it here!

For example when I first listened to SoTR I identified with Vanaheim, (whose music also majestically reflects its theme -for me anyway!).
 I mean, remember the verse:
 "Take the seed of Frej
 Put in the sacred soil
 Make it come alive
 And fertility will rise"
Well, when listening to the rhythm of the above verse, I can easily imagine a man ploughing the land with a tool!!!

As far as why I identified with Vanaheim?
Well perhaps I consider my self "dead":
 "Enter Vanaheim
 Where dead will come alive."

or perhaps because I want to know myself:
 "Enter Vanaheim
and you will know thy self."
(kinda refers to my nickname or what? )

or perhaps because lately I try to sacrifice (myself):
 Vana-king and queen,
Lord and lady of the gods
 If you sacrifice
 They'll release your fylgia.
 ...

Well, that's more than enough from me for now...
Lets see if there any other crazy identifications going on here with its excellency, SoTR!

 c ya!
Vanaheim is the world that is closest to my psyche

I can't wait to hear it! I'm sure that it will be another wonderful work!
When I saw this post I tried to choose the best Therion album for me, but I can't do it! Maybe Deggial, maybe SotR...
Therion is an unique band... not only cause the wonderful sound, but the lyrics too.
"I am the flame that burns in every heart of man, and in the core of every star. I am Life, and the giver of Life, yet therefore is theknowledge of me the knowledge of death."

When I listen to Via Nocturna I picture a neophyte being conduncing through a forest to his iniciation.... a dark forest, with a path made with fire... and some people waiting for him in the heart of that forest...
You can even identify yourself with that neophyte, how he is feeling, while you are listen to the music....

Yea, Therion's music can awake the imagination  :)
During "Raven Of Dispersion" I see red sky above and the dark sea below - I'm flying with him through the darker clouds, up, up, up... Somewhere to another dimension... I feel the peace, everything is so far away, I don't have to think about this life here...
"Clavicula Nox" - sometimes I see the gate to another world, large, made of iron... And sometimes I see the  fire and naked people dancing around it, hehe, Valpurgia, NOX, the last night of April... Anyway during the rest of songs I see different pictures in my mind each time... There is no better band than Therion...
Black bird fly, rise very high to a place above the sky
Take me away, lead astray where I find another day

i agree, in my opinion Vovin is still the best Album of the band, because it has a lot songs which just touch my mind, and i still love Ralf Sheepers voice in "the wild hunt" (its a goddamn waste that Therion dont perform this song live anymore). This may refer to the fact, that Vovin was my first album of Therion, but i still think that not even theli can reach it. khaos

P.S. Symphony Masses is the second best album i think, but let us not quarrel about it.
Nothing to say.

Off course Deggial is awesome.
 Every therion cd is awesome.
I Thought that when people said that 'there is no way to choose the best album of their favorite band' were wrong.
But here is therion....... 10 albums and I cannot choose wich one is the one I like more or the one I like less, well maybe of darkness... since the recording quality was quite bad. Or maybe crowning of atlantis, since I had already heard almost all the songs in it  :D
What in the world did Chris smoke to write crowning of atlantis and Gothic Kabbalah?

I think I agree with you about the "less like" albums and of course every album is great but everybody has their preferences  :D

By the way... did you go to the stratovarius concert?

I love Secret of the Runes, especially Vanaheim. Now, if only I could find someplace that sells the Limited Edition version with the raised cover I'd have a complete collection as far as I know [ minus demos and the Fanclub CD ]

nifelheim is a masterpiece. Certainly the defining track as far as complexity goes on that album i think.

Not to say the rest of it is not superb.  But the tracks I skip to constantly are nifelheim and the two bonus covers  :D
